From Seed to Diamond

Diamonds have long been celebrated as symbols of eternal love, luxury and brilliance. Traditionally, these diamonds form deep within the Earth’s crust over millions of years. However, in recent years, a new contender has entered the spotlight: labgrown diamonds. These marvels of modern science offer the same dazzling shine and beauty as their natural counterparts, but with a smaller environmental footprint and ethical advantages. But, how are these diamonds created?

Diamond Formation

Mined diamonds form from carbon under extreme pressure and temperature conditions about 150 kilometers beneath the Earth’s surface. Labgrown diamonds replicate this process in a controlled environment, resulting in diamonds that are chemically, physically and optically identical to mined diamonds. Moreover, because they are created in a controlled setting, labgrown diamonds can be produced with fewer impurities and inclusions. There are two primary methods for creating these gems: High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD).

High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT)

  • A small diamond seed, which serves as the core of the new diamond, is placed in a press that generates extreme pressure and temperature.
  • Carbon is introduced into the press in the form of graphite or another carbon source. Under the immense pressure and heat, the carbon atoms bond to the diamond seed, growing into a diamond crystal.
  • Over a period of a few weeks to several months, the carbon atoms crystallize into a diamond.

Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)

  • A diamond seed is placed in a vacuum chamber, where it is heated to high temperatures. The chamber is then filled with a carbon-rich gas, typically methane.
  • The gas is ionized using a microwave or other energy source, causing the carbon atoms to separate and deposit onto the diamond seed. As the carbon atoms bond, they form a diamond crystal.
  • During  several weeks a diamond grows layer by layer to its desired size.
